Happy as a Clam

By Brett A. Starr on August 24, 2024

“Happy as a clam” – this idiom means

Content or satisfied with life it seems

From where did this originate?

In the 1800’s from Northeastern States

The phrase is just contained inside

“Happy as a clam at high tide”

The water guards them from being prey

Keeps hungry birds far away

But too, the clam appears to smile

When opened up - its curvy style

Reveals muscles and a pearl

The queen of gemstones of this world

So, when we feel secured from fear

With a smile extending from ear to ear

To all with interest, of course take heed

We’re happy as a clam with life indeed

Bury the Hatchet

By Brett A. Starr on December 29, 2024

Bury the hatchet, we know what that means

Resolving a feud for long lasting peace

This centuries-old gesture came from native tribes

Of North America when settling sides

They buried a weapon they commonly used

This act was symbolic to start something new

If you currently have an ongoing fight

Try burying the hatchet and get on with your life

Knock on Wood

By Brett A. Starr on November 22, 2024

Why do we knock on wood?

A little tap is plenty good

So where did this come from?

It’s said by nearly everyone

This goes back to ancient times

It was a pagan pantomime

To summon the spirits, they believed

For protection, they knocked on trees

The Celts they rapped for their good luck

In hopes their plans wouldn’t run amuck

Again, they tapped to say thank you

When blessed their hopes – they did come true

Today, we often use this phrase

And tap some wood for good luck days

It came from ancient mythology

Another piece of history

Glove Compartment

By Brett A. Starr on September 29, 2023

A service manual, registration papers,

Air fresheners, and tire gauges,

Small tools, a partial pack of gum,

But not enough for everyone.

Restaurant coupons, service station receipts,

Tiny ketchup packets, and spare batteries,

Fingernail clippers, a small tissue box,

Electrical fuses, and a worn-out broken watch.

Of all the objects in a glove compartment,

That’s all that comes to mind,

But a trusty pair of gloves…

You are likely not to find.
